Winnipeg, MB –Mayor Sam Katz has announced the city and province are contributing 60% of expected costs for sump pump and backup valve installations, as a preventative measure before the flood season hits this spring. Basement Systems Winnipeg has helped influence this decision having noted the impact sump pumps can have in preventing flood damage.
This decision comes as the result of warnings from the U.S. National Weather Service regarding the Red River flooding this spring. City plumbers have estimated that past flooding has caused nearly $100 million worth of damage in local homes, and homeowners should be prepared.
In response to such damage, Basement Systems Winnipeg President Anthony Melanchuk says, "I'm going to say at least 50 per cent of that could be offset if homes had sump pits."
Many homeowners have pushed off this repair in hopes that their basements will be spared. A basement sump pit is a preventative measure with less aesthetically pleasing attributes when compared to upper level upgrades.
Once the plan receives approval by the City Council, homeowners can expect a maximum of $3,000 to be contributed to their installation.
